11 May 2010 - Rotary - Working with Young People in the Community

Students from Lutterworth College at Church Close, Lutterworth, working on improving and planting new flower beds for the enjoyment of the local residents.

During last year two teams were created from Lutterworth College students, one from the Enterprise Centre and one from the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme in which, through the inspired and dedicated work of our volunteer tutors - Rotarian Elaine Turner and Mr. George Turner and Tilly Yates of the Enterprise Centre Team not only won but picked up the Cosby TocH Gold Award for working within the community.  The first year of the project culminated in a garden party at Church Close where prizes were awarded and all of the participants had the chance to meet and exchange gifts with the residents. This year the Enterprise students are continuing to develop the whole border and will be entered for an NOCN Award (National Open College Network).

Tools to do the job were provided by The Rotary Club of Lutterworth along with expert gardening advice and now in the second year of  the project, maintenance of the flower border continues.

With the dedicated team of tutors who are giving students the chance of gaining a qualification in a new and practical subject to assist them in obtaining a job when they leave school. They have also inspired the students with a new interest in horticulture and have watched them develop a whole range of skills and personal qualities over the 2 years they have worked together.

Rotary is proud of what has been achieved up to now and plan to work with the college in expanding their work with the Enterprise Centre in similar projects particularly on the practical side of education over the coming years.
